Abstract:
Theoretical models predict HMXBs undergo population changes as host stars age, due to the variety of formation timescales for different object classes (supergiant, Be, and wind-fed HMXBs). However, it has not been possible to constrain this evolution due to a lack of age-discriminating measurements of host stellar populations in galaxies. To alleviate this limitation, we will obtain Chandra coverage for 19 galaxies in the PHANGS-JWST sample. The sample will soon have exquisite JWST imaging spanning 2-21um supplementing existing ALMA, VLT/MUSE, and Hubble data; thus allowing for high-precision stellar age and metallicity constraints at 5-50 pc scales. We will uniquely constrain the age evolution of the HMXB luminosity function on meaningful timescales while controlling for metallicity.
