Abstract:
Magnetic field may play a key role in regulating the environment of the Galactic center. We propose a deep Chandra observation of G0.17-0.41 -- a distinct 2.6'-long X-ray thread embedded within a locally inflated nonthermal radio filament. The morphological and spectral properties of this radio/X-ray association suggest that magnetic re-connection is the energy source, providing probably the best evidence so far for this process to occur in the ISM. The observation will enable a critical test of this scenario, chiefly by determining the thermal or nonthermal nature of the X-ray emission, as well as its substructure and position-dependent spectral characteristics. The understanding of the process can have strong implications for the study of plasma heating and cosmic-ray acceleration.
