Abstract:
Supermassive black holes (BHs) play a crucial role in the cosmic evolution and they were in place at the earliest epochs in the history of the Universe. Yet, the origin of the first BHs is still a mystery. The cleanest observations to probe the formation and early growth of BHs is offered by the detection of z>7 BHs. In this project, we will exploit one of nature's telescopes, Abell 370, and combine the unique capabilities of JWST and Chandra. We will search for accreting BHs in JWST-detected gravitationally-lensed galaxies by using the proposed deep Chandra observations of Abell 370. This study will open a new window into accreting BHs and deliver the much-needed detection of z>7 BHs, thereby constraining the formation scenarios and the rapid early growth of the first BHs.
