Abstract:
The embedded massive young Herbig Be star R Mon illuminates Hubble's Variable Nebula. It drives a jet and excites HH-39. A short 10 ks Chandra observation revealed an unusually hard X-ray spectrum and strong fluorescent Fe line (6.4 keV). The X-ray spectrum strikingly resembles that of some embedded massive protostars suggesting that R Mon is a rare Herbig star progenitor. Since the short exposure already shows intriguing results we propose a deeper observation of R Mon to obtain a spectrum of sufficient quality to better constrain its X-ray properties and test emission models based on shock and magnetic processes.
