Abstract:
Chandra observations have established quantitative relationships between the X-ray binary (XRB) X-ray luminosity function and local properties of the host galaxies. The most recent studies indicate that metallicity becomes important above 1E+38 erg/s. Substantial progress in understanding the interplay between metallicity and bright XRBs can be made by (i) increasing the sample of nearby low-metallicity hosts with suitable X-ray data, and (ii) leveraging coordinated multi-band HST imaging to identify XRB optical counterparts (donor star or star cluster) on a case by case basis. We propose to do so for the 23 nearby dwarf galaxies targeted by the HST LEGUS survey: out of those, 6 have suitable Chandra data; we propose to observe the remaining 17, for a total request of XX ks.
