Abstract:
We propose to observe 5 interacting/merger galaxy pairs at close separation (<15") to characterize their nuclear activity. We aim at determining the mechanisms affecting the onset or flickering of the emission from SMBH. Our galaxy pairs at close separation were selected from a sample of southern nearby merging/interacting galaxies, for which an HST and a MUSE/VLT filler large programs are currently ongoin. Swift data for ten additional interacting systems with >20~arcsec separation are also available (the programme is ongoing). Chandra observations will provide a unique combination of HST+MUSE+X-ray data for these interacting galaxies in different phases of merging, and will allow a cleaner view (i.e., less affected by obscuration and host-galaxy contamination) of the nuclei.
