Abstract: We propose observations to measure proper motions in the X-ray jet of the nearby radio galaxy M87. Observations with the High Resolution Camera (HRC-I) instrument will be compared against archival Chandra observations to measure, or strictly limit, the proper motions of the outer knots in the jet. These results will probe the bulk relativistic flow of the X-ray jet and constrain possible origin mechanisms of the knots. The measurements from this analysis will provide the highest precision X-ray proper motion measurements ever for an extragalactic source, a capability entirely unique to Chandra |
