Abstract:
We propose a Large Program to survey all known radio-loud quasars at z>6. The supermassive black holes powering these quasars have grown to tremendous size in a short time, and explaining this growth remains a challenge. One potential explanation -- jets -- should produce a characteristic X-ray signature as relativistic particles inverse Compton scatter off the CMB. This effect would be maximized at high redshift due to the (1+z)^4 scaling of the CMB's energy density. Our proposed program will conduct a thorough census of all known radio-loud quasars at z>6 to search for signs of X-ray emission from jets, a tell-tale signature of rapid growth
