Abstract:
We propose to conclusively detect and measure X-ray properties of two jets in radio-loud quasars at redshifts z>3. Short exposure observations have identified these two systems as containing probable X-ray jets that are distinguished by unique distance scales and/or alignments between the X-ray and radio features. Our proposed Chandra observations will be used to measure the morphology, power, and surface brightness of these energetic systems for the first time. Spectroscopic properties will also be measured, and various emission models will be assessed for the most probable physical origin of the extended X-rays. These proposed observations will permit an in-depth analysis of two unique X-ray jets, while also adding to the critically undersampled population of X-ray jets at z>3.
