Abstract: In recent years, samples of galaxy clusters selected via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect have enabled studies of galaxy cluster evolution over nearly 10 Gyr in cosmic time. To anchor these, and future studies, we propose Chandra observations of the first complete, mass-selected, and unbiased sample of galaxy clusters at z~0.2. This sample of 108 clusters will immediately allow for a variety of studies, including cluster demographics, AGN populations, and self similarity, alongside the search for rare, extreme systems such as the Bullet and Phoenix clusters. By design, this sample would prove the perfect complement to the completed eRosita All-Sky Survey, providing low-S/N, wide-field, high angular resolution imaging alongside wide-field, high-S/N (>5000 counts) eRASS imaging and spectra. |
