Abstract:
Unveiling the properties and evolution of the intracluster medium (ICM) and the AGN-star formation-halo connection in early-forming systems all the way back to z ~ 3 will be among the primary science goals of both Athena and Chandra successor missions (e.g., Lynx, AXIS). While many of the most exciting questions about the initial formation of galaxy clusters must wait for these next-generation X-ray missions, the complementarity between Chandra observations and millimeter data offers a unique opportunity to probe cluster physics in the 1 < z < 2 range. Hence, we propose to observe 3 clusters from the SPTpol catalog at z > 0.9 to complete a legacy-class sample of 76 clusters spanning 0.2 < z < 1.4 and selected to be the progenitors of well-studied nearby clusters such as Perseus and Coma.
