Abstract:
We propose to perform a Chandra survey of the first uniform and complete sample of luminous quasars at z>6.5, including 13 quasars. The measured quasar luminosity function (QLF) indicates that the decline of quasar density accelerated at z>6.5, suggests a new phase of quasar evolution close to the epoch of the earliest SMBH formation. Here we will observe 7 quasars that do not yet have X-ray observations. Using this large sample, we will carry out the first statistical measurement of X-ray properties of z>6.5 quasars, to probe the evolution of X-ray slope, SED and accretion rate of early quasars. Together with QLF, BH mass function, quasar lifetime measurements, the Chandra X-ray observations will provide key constraints to the formation and growth history of the earliest SMBHs.
