Abstract:
We propose a unique study to observe the spatially resolved X-ray emission from the brightest known strongly lensed giant arc, a starburst galaxy at observed at the peak of ``Cosmic Noon'' (z=2.37). With the boost from gravitational lensing we will reach depths that would require a 28 Ms in deep field. The highly magnified Chandra PSF resolves a physical scale of ~600 pc, allowing the first measurement of HMXB populations in resolved star-forming regions--all with well-measured stellar population ages and metallicities--in the distant Universe. We will combine the X-ray data with extant rest-frame UV+optical spectroscopy to jointly constrain the X-ray and UV-optical properties of the most massive stars (M > 20 Msun), the stellar-mass black holes that they form, and the high end of the IMF.
