Abstract:
Shocks and cold fronts in merging galaxy clusters are believed to play an important role in the (re)energization of relativistic particles generating diffuse synchrotron sources in the intra-cluster medium (ICM). By using the recently released data of the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey, we found 3 merging galaxy clusters that show diffuse radio emission characterized by sharp surface brightness jumps. The proposed observations will allow us to study the connection between the thermal and non-thermal gas structures by searching for cospatial discontinuities in the X-rays associated to the edge-like features observed in radio. This will shed light on the mechanisms responsible for the particle (re)energization in the ICM unveiled by LOFAR.
