Abstract:
A substantial fraction of the stellar mass attributed to galaxies is invisible: stars close to the hydrogen burning limit, brown dwarfs, white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes (including primordial ones). These constituents do, however, gravitationally micro-lens background quasars, thereby permitting measurement of the total stellar contribution to the mass surface density along the line of sight. Sensitive X-ray observations with a sufficiently long time baseline can unambiguously determine the stellar mass at specific locations in individual lensing galaxies and calibrate the stellar mass fundamental plane, providing a determination of the stellar M/L. We propose to begin systematically obtaining such X-ray light curves, leveraging two decades of existing Chandra data.
