Abstract:
We propose 87 ks of Chandra ACIS-S observations to characterize the X-ray emission from four nearby extreme high-ionization UV emission-line galaxies. These extreme UV galaxies are good analogs to high redshift (z>7) reionization-era sources and will allow us to investigate the hard radiation fields and physical conditions which power cosmic reionization. Our sample represents a pilot survey containing the most extreme high-ionization UV emission lines (e.g., CIV and HeII) measurements for star-forming galaxies at z~0. These observations will allow us to link X-ray sources for the first time to observations of extreme UV emission sources leaking high-energy photons, and constrain the contribution of high mass X-ray binaries to the ionizing photon budget that reionized the Universe.
